Stop the Diablo Swindle
Protect Californians’ wallets and wellbeing – stop the 15-year extension of Diablo Canyon nuclear plant because it is…
Too expensive
Operations through 2030 are already costing an estimated $3.25 billion in public subsidies. How much will Californians pay for 15 more years to subsidize corporate profit?
Unnecessary
The State of California has confirmed that Diablo Canyon is no longer needed for grid reliability.
Threatens public health
The plant presents multiple concerns to public health, including risk of radiation release due to system failure, employee error, natural disaster, or act of terrorism, delayed seismic assessments, lack of a permanent nuclear waste storage system, and the association between nuclear plants and cancer mortality.
Harms the marine environment
The plant is California’s number one pollution discharger and kills the most marine life of any point source in California.
Inhibits renewable energy
Diablo Canyon prevents renewables on the grid and the “cost savings” associated with the plant are mainly attributed to a divestment from renewables.
Diablo Canyon is not Needed for Energy Reliability
Diablo Canyon is dirty, dangerous, and not needed for energy reliability. California’s power supply system already has sufficient clean energy and storage capacity to meet demand through 2036 and beyond.
Running Diablo Canyon 24/7 is already crowding out less expensive and more climate-friendly renewables and storage. And it can’t be switched on and off in order to accommodate the energy influx from renewables and storage; it must run 24/7. Twenty more years of guaranteed Diablo Canyon operation will cause a serious setback to the astounding growth of renewables and storage in our state.

Coalition Partners
We are a coalition of consumer, clean energy, environmental, and social justice organizations committed to the idea that electricity should be affordable and safe without harming the environment, local communities, or the climate.
Together, we are asking state legislators to stop subsidizing a costly, unnecessary, dangerous, and dirty nuclear plant for 20 more years. We demand transparency, accountability, and protections for the California public.
